# Capex planning settings

> The value bands that decide a scheme's category, and the natures of investment a consolidated plan is sliced by.

Configuration for [capex planning](/finance/capex-planning): what makes a scheme fall into one
category rather than another, and why the money is being spent.

## Category value bands

A scheme is categorised as **Clubbed**, **Specified**, **Flexible** or **Project** by its value,
against a ladder of bands you set — a minimum (inclusive) and a maximum (exclusive), either end open.
Bands can be set per division; a band naming a division beats one that doesn't, most-specific-wins,
one category at a time, so two divisions can run entirely different ladders.

<Warning>
  A category with no band configured is a category nothing checks — a plan can carry a line in that
  category and no value-band exception is ever raised against it. And a ladder has to actually be a
  ladder: two bands that overlap put one value in two categories at once, and a gap between them
  leaves a value in none. This screen checks the *effective* ladder — the one a plan is actually
  measured against, after divisional overrides are applied — rather than the rows as typed.
</Warning>

## Natures of investment

Why the money is being spent — capacity gearing, cost reduction, statutory compliance, and whatever
else a division tracks separately. A consolidated plan's figures are reported under this list, so
it's what those numbers are sliced by. A nature can be scoped to one division or offered to all of
them; retiring one leaves the schemes already recorded against it untouched.
