# Checklist library

> The reusable, versioned checklists a maintenance plan's tasks are built from.

A library of checklists a [maintenance plan](/maintenance/plan-builder) can pull onto its own task
list, so a step typed once — the eight-point quarterly service, the safety isolation sequence — does
not get retyped on every plan that needs it.

## Checklists are versioned

Like an [inspection template](/config/inspections), a checklist here has a **draft** and a
**published** version. A plan always copies the version in force at the moment it pulls the
checklist onto its own task list — publishing a correction here never rewrites a plan that has
already copied it. To change what plans copy from now on, take a draft, edit its steps — reordered
by dragging — and publish it.

  A checklist with nothing published cannot be pulled onto a plan at all: there is no version in
  force to copy. Open it and publish the draft first.

## Who is using this one

Expand a checklist to see which plans have pulled it. Worth checking before editing a widely-used
one, and before deleting it — a checklist still in use should usually be retired instead.

## Retiring versus removing

**Retire** (`is_active` off) takes a checklist out of the picker offered when building a plan, and
leaves every plan already built from it untouched — the ordinary end of a checklist's working life.

**Delete** is a soft delete on the checklist's own row. Plans that already copied it keep their
steps; they simply stop being able to tell whether the library's version has since moved on.

## Correcting a plan that is behind

Editing this library never changes a plan on its own, by design — a plan's steps are its own copy,
not a live link. Where a plan's section has fallen behind a published update, that plan says so on
its own [Tasks step](/maintenance/plan-builder#tasks); bringing it up to date is done there, section
by section, not from this screen.
