# Microsoft Clarity

> Connecting your own Microsoft Clarity project to record how people use the web app: what Clarity may see, what it is told about each person, and confirming that people were told.

This screen connects your organisation's own Microsoft Clarity project, so you can see how people
use the web app — where they click, how far they scroll, where they give up — as recordings and
heatmaps in your own Clarity account. It runs in the web app only, never in the field app.

Nothing is recorded until an administrator fills this screen in and switches recording on. Until
then the web app loads nothing from Microsoft at all.

Open it from **Administration** → **Integrations** → **Microsoft Clarity**. The header shows
**Recording** while recording is on and **Off** once it has been saved switched off.

## Who can use this screen

The screen needs **Integration · admin** — see the
[permission reference](https://docs.assetinfinity.ai/setup/roles.md#permission-reference). Without it the card is not offered, and
opening the screen's address says it is not available to your account.

## Your Clarity project

The screen asks four things, in the order somebody setting this up reads them: which project, how much
of the screen Clarity may see, what it is told about each person, and whether to record at all.

![The Microsoft Clarity screen, with the Project id, What Clarity may see, Who a recording belongs to and Record sessions in Clarity](https://mintcdn.com/assetinfinity/Bqj_ehUrD1BmMt_o/images/admin/integrations-clarity-light.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=Bqj_ehUrD1BmMt_o\&q=85\&s=e6f7424895294afe695876295249ccb5)

| Field | What it means | Notes |
| - | - | - |
| **Project id** | Your Clarity project's identifier | Required. In Clarity, open **Settings** and then **Setup**: it is the short code at the end of the tracking script |
| **What Clarity may see** | How much of each screen reaches Clarity | **Mask all text** (the default) or **Use my Clarity project's masking setting** — see below |
| **Who a recording belongs to** | What Clarity is told about the person being recorded | **User id only** (the default) or **User id, name and email address** — see below |
| **Record sessions in Clarity** | Switches recording on or off | Off until you tick it |

### What Clarity may see

| Choice | What is recorded |
| - | - |
| **Mask all text** | Clicks, scrolling and the layout of each screen are recorded; every word on it is hidden before it leaves the browser. Recommended, because screens here carry names, asset details and costs |
| **Use my Clarity project's masking setting** | Clarity decides, by the masking mode set in your project. Its default hides what people type, numbers and email addresses, and shows other text |

### Who a recording belongs to

| Choice | What Clarity is told |
| - | - |
| **User id only** | Each person's id in this product, which Clarity scrambles before it is sent. You can follow one person's sessions, but Clarity never learns who they are |
| **User id, name and email address** | Also sends each person's name and email address to Microsoft, so you can find a session by who it was |

## Confirming that people were told

The first time you switch recording on, a box appears under **Record sessions in Clarity**: *I
confirm that the people who use this product have been told their sessions are recorded with
Microsoft Clarity, and why. This is passed to Clarity as their consent.* **Save** stays unavailable
until it is ticked.

It is asked once, because it is a fact about your organisation rather than about this form. Afterwards
the screen says who confirmed it and when, and it is not asked again when the settings change.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Recording people at work is yours to decide and to tell them about. Tell the people who use the
> product before you switch it on, and choose **Mask all text** unless you have a reason not to.

## When a change takes effect

**Save** stores the settings. People see the change the next time they sign in or reload the page,
not straight away.

A session is recorded only while somebody is signed in. Signing out stops the recording and clears
Clarity's cookies in that browser, so on a shared computer the next person is recorded as themselves,
not as whoever used it before. Clarity is told that nothing here is advertising, so the recordings are
not joined to Microsoft's advertising products.
