# Depreciation settings

> Country packs, accounting books, asset classes, policies, rules and the ledger accounts a book posts to.

Configuration for [Depreciation](/finance/depreciation) — set up once by a controller and then left
alone for a year.

## Country packs

Where a company's country publishes a standard arrangement — which books it keeps, how its statutes
cut the fleet, and what each cut attracts — installing that country's pack writes the calendar, books,
classes, policies and rules in one step, and leaves you only the two things it can't know: your own
ledger accounts, and the assets themselves. Only offered where there's something to install: a company
with no book yet, and a pack matching its country (others are reachable behind **Other countries**,
since a company incorporated in one jurisdiction and filing in another is ordinary).

Two packs ship today:

| Pack | Books it installs |
| - | - |
| **India** | Companies Act 2013 Schedule II, and Income-tax Act 1961 block-of-assets |
| **United States** | A book following ASC 360, and a federal tax book on MACRS (IRS Publication 946) |

<Note>
A pack writes neither book ready to post: ledger accounts are yours to add and map afterwards, and
a note on the install result says exactly what else it deliberately left for you to confirm — the
India pack, for instance, asks you to confirm the Schedule II life against your own technical
assessment rather than assuming the statute's default is right for every asset.
</Note>

Installing a pack for a second company in the same organisation reuses classes and policies already
present under the same codes rather than duplicating them, so anything you've already edited is left
exactly as it is.

## Accounting books

One book is one set of answers about the whole fleet. A book names a **company**, its **currency**,
and a [fiscal calendar](/config/fiscal-calendars); mark it **pooled** if it depreciates a block of
assets as one figure rather than machine by machine. A book with no posting rule mapped can compute a
draft but can't hand over a journal.

## Asset classes and policies

A **class** groups the fleet the way your accountant does — a Schedule II class, a MACRS property
class, an Income Tax block — deliberately separate from the engineering categories assets are grouped
by elsewhere. A **policy** is a method (straight line, written-down value, a published rate table, or
units of production), a life or rate, a residual percentage, and a first-period convention.

A **rule** maps one class to one policy within one book, which is what actually decides what an
enrolled asset depreciates by.

## Rate tables

A named set of published percentages — MACRS's GDS tables, for instance — that a policy can point at
instead of computing a rate itself, for a regime whose depreciation is defined as a table rather than
a formula.

## Accounts and posting

The ledger accounts a book's journal posts to. Until these are mapped, a book computes drafts
correctly and simply can't post them.
