This is different from [document storage](/config/documents): that page is about files people attach to records, and this one is about a document the product *produces*, from a template you design once. ## The page is the editor The middle of the screen is the document itself, not a list of blocks beside a preview. What you see is what the renderer draws from the same template — click a block on the page to select it, and it's outlined where it landed. Moving a block up or down is two buttons rather than a drag, because a document is one column, not a two-dimensional layout — up and down is the direct manipulation here, and it works from a keyboard. ## The blocks | Block | Puts on the page | | - | - | | **Heading** | A line of bold text that starts a section | | **Paragraph** | Wrapping prose, breaking across pages a line at a time | | **Labelled facts** | Pairs of label and value, in one or two columns — the record's own numbers and dates | | **Table** | Rows queried from the record — its tasks, its parts, its readings — repeating its header across a page break | | **Signature line** | A rule to sign on, with who signed, when, and the mark they made if one was captured | | **Divider** | A hairline across the page | | **Space** | Vertical whitespace, in points | | **Page break** | Everything after it starts on a new page | That's the whole palette — no image, logo or barcode block, because the renderer writes the file directly rather than driving a browser, which is what keeps it light enough to run on-prem. ## Letterhead A template can add your letterhead: your logo, legal name and address on the first page, and your name in the footer of every page. The logo comes from [Branding](/setup/branding) — if you've set a logo on screen but haven't uploaded one prepared for print, the letterhead says so rather than printing a blank space where it should be. ## Page size A4 or Letter, or left blank to follow the tenant's own country. Pin a size only for a document that has to come out the same size wherever it's printed; the on-screen preview always matches whichever size actually applies. ## When it's offered A template can carry a condition — offered only when it holds, so a shutdown permit template doesn't appear as an option on a routine inspection. ## Draft, published, retired | Status | Means | | - | - | | **Draft** | Being written. Nothing in the product produces it yet | | **Published** | Available to the product — offered wherever its record type lets you generate a document | | **Retired** | Out of service. What was already produced with it is kept | ## Producing a document On the record itself, **Produce document** renders a published template against that record and opens the result — it doesn't download straight to a folder, so you can check the vendor, the lines and the total before it leaves the building. The file is filed under the record's own **Files**, so it's there whether or not anybody opens it from this dialog. Retention, categories and tags for every file attached to a record — including what this screen produces.
