# Energy settings

> Commodities, supply points, tariffs, emission factors, weather sources and reduction targets.

Configuration for [Energy management](/energy/energy-management) — decided once when a contract's
signed, separate from the day-to-day act of recording a reading.

## Commodities and supply points

A **commodity** is whatever a site buys and measures — electricity, gas, water, diesel, compressed
air — with the unit every reading against it is denominated in. A **supply point** is one meter or
connection for a commodity, and can name an asset, a location, or just a site; it's also reachable
directly from the header of the [Energy](/energy/energy-management) screen, since adding one is often
the answer to "this meter isn't here yet".

## Tariffs

What a commodity costs, so a reading turns into a cost as well as a quantity.

## Emission factors

How much carbon a unit of a commodity carries, effective-dated the way a tariff is — a period is
costed at the factor in force while it was consumed, so recording a cleaner grid later never restates
a year already reported. Nothing ships seeded: a factor whose source you can't name isn't a figure
worth quoting.

## Weather sources

Which sensor a site counts its degree-days from, and the base temperature to count against — an
outdoor sensor, since an indoor one measures the heating rather than the weather. The base is
jurisdictional (15.5°C is the British convention, 18.3°C the American); mixing bases across sites
makes the years incomparable. Without a weather source, a site simply has no degree-days and
consumption is compared against last year's figure as-is, cold snap included.

## Targets

A reduction target names a commodity, an optional supply point or site, a commitment (down by some
percentage, or an allowed increase), a period, and the baseline period it's measured against. Where
each one stands is read on the [Energy](/energy/energy-management) screen, not here.
