# Tool settings

> The statuses and conditions that together decide whether an instrument can be issued, plus types and categories.

## Two lists, one question

Whether a tool can be issued is decided by **two flags on two different records**:

| List                | Flag                  | Says                           |
| ------------------- | --------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| **Tool statuses**   | Available for booking | Whether it is free to be taken |
| **Tool conditions** | Blocks use            | Whether it is safe to take     |

A tool can be *Available* by status and *Damaged* by condition. Only the pair answers the question,
which is why the [tool register](/assets/tools) leads with the answer rather than the two inputs.

## Tool statuses

Where the tool is in its own life: available, issued, in maintenance, lost, retired. Set **available
for booking** on the ones that mean it can be taken out.

## Tool conditions

What state it is in: good, worn, damaged, out of service. Set **blocks use** on the ones that mean
it must not be taken, whatever its status says.

## Tool types and categories

What kind of tool it is, for grouping and for naming requirements on a
[maintenance plan](/maintenance/plan-builder) — "a torque wrench" rather than a specific one, so any
suitable instrument satisfies the requirement.

## Calibration

Calibration is not configured here — the interval lives on each tool, because it is a property of
the instrument rather than of a list.

What matters is that calibration is tracked **separately from status and condition**. An overdue
instrument still works and still reads; its readings are simply no longer evidence. See
