# An article

> Reading a knowledge base article, saying whether it helped, and amending, reviewing, publishing, archiving and restoring it — with its full version history.

An article's page is where you read one answer from the knowledge base, say whether it helped, and —
if you write articles — amend it, send it for review, publish it or archive it.

Open one from the **Search** or **All articles** tab of [Articles](/documents/knowledge-base). An
article people follow is treated like a controlled document: every published version is kept, the
history is on the page, and changing a published article never rewrites what people are following
until the change is published.

## The header

| Part | What it shows |
| - | - |
| **Articles** | Back to the knowledge base |
| Title | The article's title |
| Status pill | **draft**, **in review**, **published** or **archived** |
| Type pill | The kind of article, such as troubleshooting |
| **v***n* **in review** / **draft v***n* **waiting** | A published article has a newer version being prepared |
| Code, kind of asset, failure code | Such as KB-0001, Centrifugal Pump, BRG-WEAR |
| **written by** | The author |

Under the header: how many **views**, how many readers **said it helped** and **said it did not**,
and the date it was **published**.

## The buttons

Which buttons you see depends on the article's state and your permissions (see [who can do
what](/documents/knowledge-base#who-can-do-what)).

| Button | What it does | When it appears |
| - | - | - |
| **Amend** | Opens a new draft of the article. The published version stays exactly as it is | You may edit articles, and the article is not archived |
| **Continue the draft** | Changes the draft that is already waiting | Replaces **Amend** while a newer draft exists |
| **Ask for a review** | Sends the draft to review. The article stays published meanwhile | There is a draft not yet in review |
| **Publish** | Makes the draft the published version. The previous version is marked superseded | There is a draft, and you may publish articles |
| **Archive** | Takes the article out of search, with a reason | You may archive articles, and it is not archived |
| **Restore** | Brings an archived article back | The article is archived, and you may archive articles |

### The status flow

| Status | Meaning | Visible in search |
| - | - | - |
| **draft** | Being written. A new article starts here, and **Save draft** never publishes | No |
| **in review** | Waiting for somebody who may publish to agree to the words | No (a published article stays visible while its next version is in review) |
| **published** | The answer people follow | Yes |
| **archived** | No longer the answer. Its versions are kept | No |

Editing a draft that is waiting on a review sends it back to draft, so the review has to be asked for
again — the reviewer agrees to the words that will actually be published.

## Reading it

The body is headed **Version** *n* — the version readers are following — with the summary first and
the full text below. While a newer version is being prepared, a second panel, **Draft v***n* **— not
published yet**, shows it beside the published one, with **Renamed to:** *title* if the draft changes
the title.

### Was this any use?

At the end of the body, **Was this any use?** asks for **Yes** or **No**. A **No** opens a box — "What
was wrong with it? This is the part an author can act on." — and **Send**. Afterwards the page says
"You said this version helped" (or did not), with **Change your answer**. Your answer is for this
version: a new version asks again.

It is two buttons rather than a star rating because the question worth answering is whether to keep
the article at all.

### What people said

Every comment readers left, as sentences with who wrote them and when, marked with whether they found
it useful. The dissenting comments are shown in full rather than folded into a percentage, because
"reads as pump-specific — the same bearing is in the conveyor drives" tells an author what to fix.

### Came from the floor

The technicians' notes this article was made from, with who wrote them, on which asset, and when. See
[From the floor](/documents/knowledge-base#from-the-floor).

### History

Every version, newest first: its number, its status, what changed, when it was made, and **superseded**
*date* for versions that have been replaced.

## Amending an article

**Amend** (or **Continue the draft**) opens **Amend this article** (or **Continue draft v***n*).

<img className="block dark:hidden" src="https://mintcdn.com/assetinfinity/SYtCElN_frmVAm2x/images/documents/article-amend-light.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=SYtCElN_frmVAm2x&q=85&s=fbc84c8e0887113a4164b59c2535c7b9" alt="The Amend this article form" width="2880" height="1800" data-path="images/documents/article-amend-light.png" />

<img className="hidden dark:block" src="https://mintcdn.com/assetinfinity/SYtCElN_frmVAm2x/images/documents/article-amend-dark.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=SYtCElN_frmVAm2x&q=85&s=987073340af3592472183121b433ca0b" alt="The Amend this article form" width="2880" height="1800" data-path="images/documents/article-amend-dark.png" />

The form says what will happen: "This opens a new draft. The published version stays exactly as it is
until somebody publishes the draft." On a draft already in review it warns that saving sends it back
to draft.

| Field | What it means | Notes |
| - | - | - |
| **Title** | The article's title | Filled in from the current version |
| **What it says** | The article's body | Filled in from the current version |
| **What changed** | A short note on this version | Optional. "Shown in the history beside this version" |

**Save draft** saves the draft. Nothing changes for readers until it is published.

## Archiving and restoring

**Archive** opens **Archive this article**: "It stops appearing in search. Its versions stay, because
somebody followed them." It asks **Why is this no longer the answer?** — the next author needs this.
**Archive** confirms.

An archived article shows **Archived** *date* **by** *who*, and says it "does not appear in search,
and cannot be amended or published until it is restored." **Restore** brings it back.
