What kind of thing was lost or found, and how long the desk holds it before disposal is on the table.

Categories

Your own list — a phone, a wallet, keys, a laptop, documents, or whatever else actually comes through your desk. A taxonomy imposed from outside is one people work around by filing everything under Other, so the list is yours to shape, and retiring a category leaves items already filed under it, and any report built on it, untouched.

Held for

Each category carries its own retention period — the length of time a found item sits in store before it may be disposed of. A set of keys is worth holding for a year; a half-eaten sandwich is not worth holding past the afternoon, and that difference is exactly why the period lives on the category rather than as one organisation-wide number.
Nothing is deleted when a hold runs out. The period only fills in a found item’s hold-until date — disposal is refused while that hold is still running, or while somebody has been told the item is theirs — so what this screen sets is when disposal becomes possible, never automatic.
A category held for a week or less is flagged on this screen if it is still in active use: short is right for something nobody comes back for, and usually wrong for anything with a name on it.
